Thermal assessment of a power electronic module

Dissipation losses in electronic components of a power electronic module produce considerable heat. This heat shall be conducted by the housing and transferred to the surrounding via its cooling fins. The housing may also transfer heat to the vehicle’s sheet metal. In an early project stage, the housing concept should be assessed by simulations.

The simulation considers:
• Thermal conduction, convection and radiation
• Flow conditions at the fins depending on the driving speed
• Free convection for the stationary vehicle
• Stationary as well as transient events

The module is loaded 4 [min] at most. Therefore, the heating up process is of interest. The figure shows the temperature distribution on the power electronic module and the vehicle’s sheet metal for the worst case, 4 [min] after switching on the module. The temperature distribution is highly inhomogeneous. After 10 [min] of operation, the temperature at the highest loaded electronic components exceeds the critical temperature of 120 [°C]. Due to the weak coupling to the surrounding, the stationary temperature distribution is reached much later. The investigations show that the current housing is over-dimensioned with respect to its thermal requirements.
